The Pros: Sportsmen's has a great location if you need to be close to The Valley's main commercial strip - Ventura Blvd. running from Encino and Sherman Oaks thru Studio City to Universal Studios. If you're actually going to Universal for a fun day or two, I'd recommend it over the unjustified expensiveness of the two on-the-grounds high-rise hotels, the Hilton & Sheraton. Sportsmen's is just as clean, very close, and much less expensive.
The Cons: Sportsmen's is an old place with a decidely old-timey early 1900s feel, if you like that sort of thing, but consequently, the rooms, elevator, shop, etc. have an older and noisier feel to them, and we found the mattresses to be soft and bouncy, not firm enough, and the walls a little thin, not soundproofed enough. The rooms are large enough and well-appointed.
